DIY Book on Eleuthera Bonefishing

We have found that even people who start out on guided trips enjoy getting around the island and trying their luck at a true do-it-yourself bonefishing adventure. After all, the ability to chase these elusive creatures without the need of a guide and boat is one of the very special opportunities the island of Eleuthera can provide. Accordingly, we have found it valuable to put to paper a consolidated source of bonefishing locations on the island.

What the DIY Book Is Not

The DIY Book is not an instructional book on how to catch bonefish on a flyrod. Our assumption is that you will land on the island with at least a passable knowledge of bonefish and preferably have pursued bonefish before. There are a lot of great bonefishing resources you can study, including a fair amount of good information on the Internet. Fly Fishing for Bonefish, by Dick Brown and Bonefishing! by Randall Kaufmann are two of our favorite books. If you have these two books, they contain almost all of the knowledge you can hold without actually getting out onto the flats. Don’t forget to check your local library for fishing books which can provide additional information.

What the DIY Book Is

While the DIY Book does not teach you how to catch bonefish, it does have some tips which will help you pursue bonefish on the island and in other locations, especially The Bahamas. Generally, the DIY Book provides information on the location of the various flats in Eleuthera, what type of flats they are, and how to get there. There is also information on the best times and areas to fish the flats. There are also some general travel tips throughout, for instance, where to get a good beer or burger near a flat. To aid your knowledge of the area, each flat in the book has a satellite photo and most have pictures of the area. Also included with the book you will receive a CD with Google Earth waypoints of each flat mentioned. You will also receive a custom tide chart for the dates you plan to travel for each side of the island. All of this will be in laminated form you can drag around the island without getting waterlogged.
