If you are not in to beaching or fishing (or just want to take a break from both), there are many other activities in Eleuthera. Not surprisingly, most of the activities in Eleuthera revolve around the water.

Surfing

Eleuthera has a sort of cult following among surfers and it is the place to come in the Bahamas to catch a wave. Search YouTube for “Eleuthera surfing” and you will see what we mean. Not surprisingly, Surfer’s Beach is the center of the surfing scene, but the surf can be caught at Holiday Beach, Hidden Beach, James Point, and a few other places on the island.

Diving

As would be expected, Eleuthera had some great diving spots. Diving the “Current Cut” is one of the most coveted dives in the world. This is a drift dive where you are swept away at 8-10 knots, just cruising with other sea denizens, such as sharks and rays. There are countless other reefs to dive around Eleuthera and nearby Harbour Island.

Snorkeling

Great snorkeling can be found all over the island. While some beaches are better than others, most of the good beaches in Eleuthera are also great for snorkeling. The “blue map” (see “Packages”) is a great resource for pointing out snorkeling sites.

The waters around Eleuthera are teeming with life...

and teeming with bonefish! 

Caving
When you think of the Bahamas, you think beaches, not caves. Eleuthera has two main cave destinations. Preacher Cave and Hatchet Bay Caves. Preacher Cave can be explored solo, but it is advisable to visit Hatchet Bay Caves with someone who had been there before.

Shopping 
Eleuthera is not Rodeo Drive or even your local shopping mall. There is not a lot of retail commerce on the island. Don’t you get enough of that back home? Most shopping locales are centered around Governor’s Harbour and Harbour Island, though there are a few gift shops scattered along the island. Most shops have eclectic island related gifts. If you are looking for duty free watches, jewelry, and the like, you will have to make a trip to Nassau.
