Why Vacation in Eleuthera?
We have traveled extensively in The Bahamas and we love all of the islands, but Eleuthera is our main focus because we love it and we believe you will love it as well. Eleuthera has many factors which distinguish it from other Bahamas islands and other Caribbean destinations. If you are the kind of traveler who loves to see what is over the next hill or around the next bend, you will love Eleuthera. Eleuthera is a long and narrow island which is served well by roads along its length. This means that exploring the island by rental car is a vacation in itself! You could easily spend weeks exploring all of the beautiful beaches, quaint villages, soaring cliffs, and hidden caverns located on the island.
Eleuthera has amazing beaches, world class surfing, excellent diving, and what else…great fishing. Sometimes with all of the activities available on the island, it is hard to even keep your mind on fishing. That is why Eleuthera is considered by many Family Island aficionados to be one of the most enjoyable destinations in the Bahamas.
Over 300 years ago, English adventurers, in search of religious freedom and fleeing persecution in Bermuda and England, founded the Western World’s first true seat of democracy. The 70-member band led by Captain William Sayle, put ashore near Governor’s Harbour, and they named their new home Eleuthera, from the Greek word meaning freedom.
This hilly, verdant isle became the “birthplace of the Bahamas,” and the first settled of the Family Islands. Fortunately, today, Eleuthera still has the peaceful beauty that captured the adventurers and made them stay through the hardest of times.
You can fish, dive, snorkel, explore caves, or stop and wonder at some of the island’s fascinating sights, such as Ocean Hole, located inland and over 100 fathoms deep, where “pet fish” await bits of bread; Preacher’s Cave, where shipwrecked Eleutheran adventurers once took refuge and held this island’s first religious services; and the Glass Window Bridge, one of the few places where you can compare the rich blue waters of the Atlantic on one side of the road with the calm turquoise waters of the Caribbean on the other side.
Eleuthera is best loved for its quiet charm. A visit to this island provides a chance to experience true peace away from the hubbub of busy tourist centers. If you are searching for solitude where stars substitute for city lights, and the loudest noise you hear is the surf breaking as you fall asleep, or the zing of a fly reel on a pink sand flat, then you’ll find a getaway to Eleuthera a dream come true!
